I stare at Garr, my vision seeping with shades of red.

“I tore him to shreds once before. I’ll do it again,” my feral beast sings.

“Oh, my moons. What in the goddess of all heaven is going on here?” The bar maiden has stepped from the kitchen, a tray full of freshly made meals balanced on one hand, and a large mug of malt and a couple of empty mugs held firmly in the other. Her eyes are wide as saucers as she takes in the tavern situation. The wall of bodies has brought her to a grinding halt beside me.

Moving without thought, I snatch the lead dishes from her tray and toss them like Frisbees at Garr’s head.

“Hey!” Her complaint is ignored.

One, two, three, plates spin through the air, sending food flying in every which direction. Garr bolts, missing the first plate by inches. No one is waiting at the end destination for the clobber for plates two and three.

Garr moves fast for a half goat man.

The maiden screams. The large tray tips backward, its contents thrown off balance. She tries to steady the tray and malt from the mug in her other hand sloshes over nearby patrons. They rouse, yell out, tempers flaring.

I search the throngs of faces for the hooved, evil Treeite leader. Before I can locate him, something murky red with crimson eyes and pulsing maroon veins charges toward me. Kaia wrestles to take charge.

“I’ve got this,” she says with a snarl.

Wham! My head hits the wall. My back and butt crash onto the wooden steps. Ouch. I arch my back and my vertebrae pop.

Didn’t see that coming.

Clef pushed me out of the way, taking the attacker for himself. My stare could burn the fabric from his shoulders. Sneaky mind reader.

I collect my breath. Thank you, I mentally say to him. His actions have helped me subdue Kaia’s blood lust, if only temporarily.

He glances at me. “You have got something strange going on in there.” He spins his finger in a circular motion at the side of his head, inferring I’m crazy. He’s probably right.

The entire place erupts in a brawl, like something in a movie, and my crew is in the midst of the chaos.

I rub my head and push to a stand. What would Jackie Chan do?

Kick ass, Kaia’s voice whispers.

I clench my jaw. Stay out of this, Kaia. Please.

Mo is knocking heads, Ry is delivering blows and protecting Zarah. Zarah is quiet and stealthy, inducing confusion with a simple touch—her secret weapon, I presume. Even Azure and Ruby are thick in the fight.

Which means…

They have released their hold on Jaden.

Where’s Jaden?

My gaze darts over the horde searching for his ruffled dark hair. I can’t find him. I can’t find him. It’s taking too long to find him.

Found him.

He’s avoiding the conflict, skirting around the perimeter of the crowd, making his way to me.

My muscles bind and torment me.

Time to face him. Oh crap.

Am I ready for this? Not here, I’m not.

“Get out of the way, wench!”

I turn.
