Once in the traffic circle, David heard screaming from inside the subway station. Not only from women, whose high-pitched screams pierced the night but also from men. The screams from the men were not from surprise or fear but from pain. As waves of people pushed into the subway station, there was a competing force from people inside trying to get out. Those who made it out to the street quickly fell onto the pavement, crouched and convulsed uncontrollably.

David ran by one of the people who had stumbled out of a subway station. The man fell to the sidewalk, and foam bubbled from his mouth. His body jerked and jolted in every possible direction before he became totally still with his face turned skyward. In the moonlight, David could see that although the man’s eyes were wide open, his pupils were completely constricted.
