The Pitch, Tone, and Volume of Speaking

The pitch of a voice is a quantitative measure of frequency of the sound generated. Pitch does influence emotion. When the body is stressed, as with the emotions of fear, anger, and excitement, the pharynx is smaller and the vocal cords produce higher-pitched sounds. Similarly, when the body is relaxed, as with love and joy, the voice muscles are relaxed, producing lower-pitched sounds.

Volume also has an effect on emotion. Higher volume is associated with higher energy and is important to convey the emotions of excitement. Low volume conveys calmness.

Finally, the tone of the voice is an important indication of emotion. Two people can have the same pitch and volume but a different tone and, so, convey different emotions.
