CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

N othing could be heard in the house. After a night of jokes, music, and drinks, they finally returned to her townhome to catch a good night’s rest before picking up Andre in the morning.

Malik, forever in tune with her, asked her if she wanted to get Andre before driving home, but the thought of having to wake him up in the middle of the night seemed frivolous and selfish. She knew her boy was in expert hands with his grandparents.

After a hot shower, Aayala moisturized, taking time to reach every corner and crevice of her body. Her skin, where it used to be taut and firm, had yielded to softness, her stomach riddled with lines and scars that refused to budge no matter how much cocoa butter she applied each morning and night. Her hands glided over her hips, thick from carrying Andre for eight months, their shape forever transformed and redesigned.

Her ass, always her best asset, seemed to have expanded and attempted to move into a new zip code. Her breasts, modest at best, had grown and become too unwieldy, and the pleasure they’d brought in the past had changed to a mental mix of responsibility and nourishment that didn’t seem compatible with the previous way she’d enjoyed touching them.

Ayala wanted to love her new body. She wanted to irrevocably discover all the new facets and fall helplessly in love with herself. She knew and saw the beauty in her new lines, saw her lush curves under the beams of moonlight. But she couldn’t reconcile her rational understanding of how to embrace her new body to the visceral state of disappointment she felt each time she saw herself in the mirror.

She had considered removing the mirrors from her room—at least until she’d tackled her insecurities and had a healthier view of herself. She was helpless to the dissonance that came from seeing herself and not immediately recognizing the body in front of her, but lately, the urge to remove them had diminished.

Tonight, with the glow of moonlight still on her and the laughter of her friends lingering in her ears, she felt generous to herself in ways she hadn’t in a long time. The hands gliding across her body took stock, and the narrative in her brain shifted. She visited the dip of her waist, thickened with little rolls that felt comfortable under her fingers, thighs almost meeting between her legs to greet each other like long-lost lovers. Her hair, loose and wild, coiled down her shoulders in abandon, her collarbone with its elegant slopes dipping down a line to the middle of her chest where her heart beat steady and strong, her body a testament to all the battles won through the years.

As she stood unguarded to her own disappointments and gentle praises, she shivered, remembering Malik’s eyes on her today as he assured all their friends that whatever was meant to happen between them would happen at their own pace and time .

She didn’t know
