Chapter

Twenty-Six

I always forget how bad our house smells until I’ve been away from it for a while. Mildew and the sharp smell of alcohol. I cannot wait to finally escape this place.

We came home from Nathan’s yesterday, me armed with a handful of cash that I “earned” from working doubles. Or at least, that’s what I told my father when I handed it to him. It’s worth dipping into my savings—I can’t take another beating. Not after the attacks, the long night of endless questions. The ticking clock now hovering above my head, each heartbeat counting down the seconds until the bomb blows and I’m nothing more than a horrid stain on the pavement.

Dad pocketed the cash like a thief and left for the bar within five minutes of us returning home yesterday. A small mercy, since he’s now sleeping off that celebration in his room and no threat to anyone.

And me? Well, I’m hiding out in the bathroom while Ray is conked out in our room. I can’t sleep, too many thoughts whirling in my mind. I have to either figure out a way to survive the upcoming supernatural shitstorm blowing my way, or more realistically…figure out a way to take care of Ray after I get my ass kicked for good.

For a girl who’s spent her whole life waiting for the day I could get Ray and me out of this hellish place and actually have choices for once, I’ve somehow managed to end up leaving anyway, but with even less control over my life. And no, it doesn’t escape my twisted sense of humor that I’ve traded the constant threat of one person beating on me for what could possibly be an entire supernatural stadium taking a whack.

Irony, you are a wicked, wicked bitch sometimes.

But I don’t have time for tears or fist waving. I’ve got plans to make, so the pity party can wait.

Miller’s has been repaired and cleaned and opened again, but Nathan told me to take the next couple of days off, somehow noting the exhaustion I wear like a heavy coat.

“You’re much fonder of the fire than I gave you credit for.”

Draven’s words haunt me as I think of that snake creature and cringe. The darkness and the blood…

What does that make me? And why the hell does everyone want my blood?

Well, screw that. I sort of need that liquid.

I texted Draven earlier, setting up a time to meet so we can talk—strategize—and glance at my phone’s clock, willing it to be an hour later, when I’ll see him again.

Because I’ve worked my entire life to get to this point—to get my own place and gain custody of Ray. If I’m not going to let my abusive father stand in the way, then I sure as hell won’t let some goddamn demons, either.

I just need to practice drawing out my dark flame, but as I stare at my fingers held in front of me, all I can feel is icy doubt and fear.
