An early depiction of Marianne, a common personification of the French Revolution, who is conflated with the goddess Liberty. A potent symbol of the cause of liberty, this version was painted by Nanine Vallain in 1792, the year that the First Republic was declared. She hoists the ancient Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom, upon her staff while holding the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in her hand. Behind her, placing the revolution within the universal cause of humanists, is the pyramid, an ancient symbol often used by the rationalist Deists, who rejected the idea of a personal god. Original held by the Museum of the French Revolution in Vizille, France.
