Chapter Nine

“OKAY, I WON’T TOUCH you.” Michael kept his voice low, almost at a whisper. He held up his hand, forcing his face to relax and morph the frown into a smile. “It’s all right, you’re safe.”

“Who the hell are you?” Adam looked around, snapping his head left and right. “Where am I?”

Michael swallowed around the lump in his throat. How could he possibly explain all of this if Adam had no memory of it?

“Hey, I asked you a question!”

“Sorry, it’s not the easiest thing to explain.”

“Where. Am. I?”

Michael bit the inside of his cheek to muffle the groan building in his chest. He thought of ways to explain where they were without getting into the traumatic why, but came up empty. “Let’s take it slower, okay? Do you know who you are?”

Adam tilted his head, his eyes unfocused. “Adam. My name is Adam.”

“Great, that’s right.” Michael smiled and nodded, Adam relaxing under the encouragement.

“Do you remember where you were born?”

“Of course. Small village on Earth, North American continent. Where’s my mother?”

The spark of fear in Adam’s eyes twisted Michael’s stomach. He alone was responsible for this. If he hadn’t run away like a coward, Adam would have never gone through such ordeals. He’d be safe at home, under his mother’s care. And Michael would be there too, watching over him.

“Who enforces the rules on Earth?”

“Flyers,” Adam said, fast and unwavering.

“And what am I?” Michael unfurled his left wing, a passing flutter of movement. Adam caught it, his full attention drawn to it.

“Can you tell me, Adam?”

Adam shivered. He nodded and stole a quick glance at Michael. “I know you.” He rubbed his forehead, then pressed the heel of his palm to the point between his eyebrows. “At least I think I know you.”

“You do. My name is Michael. I am a flyer.”

“Punisher,” Adam said. Michael flinched at the moniker. He’d hated it.

“I don’t recognize this place.”

Michael reached out to touch Adam, but let his hand drop on the bed instead. “You wouldn’t. We’ve just arrived and neither of us has been here before.”

“Why can’t I remember?” Adam pulled his legs to him and cradled his knees.

“You’ve been hurt. I think it affected your memory.”

Adam held himself tighter and rested his head on his knees. “It’s all fuzzy. Like there’s fog covering everything. No matter where I look, I only see distorted shapes.”

“Let’s get your eyes tested.”

“No, that’s not it. I mean when I look inside my head. There should be sharp images for everything. Now everything’s foggy.”

Of course, Adam’s perfect recall wasn’t there anymore and that terrified him. Adam had been able access his memories with ease, never forgetting any detail of what he’d seen or read. Michael could only imagine how disorienting it would be to go from that to blurry recollections. Whether this side effect of his stasis was temporary or not, Adam would have trouble getting used to it.

“I still think you need a med check.” Michael stood, moving slowly. Despite his effort, Adam still jumped. “Just getting a scanner.
