And what within is richly shrined?

A sculpted woman’s form;

Lovely, in perfect rest reclined,

As one beyond the storm;

Yet not in death, but slumber, lies,

The solemn sweetness of her eyes.

She slumbered – but it came, it came!

Her land’s redeeming hour,

With the glad shout and signal flame

Set on from tower to tower

Fast through the realm a spirit moved,

‘Twas hers, the lofty and the loved.

The following lines do not attempt to give the picture whole, nor even outline the complete, of social life in Montgomery during the war between the Confederate States and the United States. The sketch includes only broken portions of the contour, a glimpse of the features, a few traces of the period which marks the passing of one phase, in the first Capital of the Confederacy, of a civilization as high as any which the world had ever known.

Imperfect as it is, if it but beckon the imagination of the present generation, if it but stir the memory of the survivors of the early sixties, it will accomplish all that is hoped by the writer who is happy to be identified in the way with any work undertaken by Confederate Veterans, or Sons of Veterans.
