We ate. We danced. I even danced with Kelsey while Bobby danced with Gwen. Kelsey and I were careful and polite with each other, and both of us, I think, were glad when our dance was finished. Gwen and I were equally careful and polite. It definitely wasn’t her fault we couldn’t get going, but I could tell she thought it was and it made her feel bad. Which made me feel bad. But it’s there or it’s not, and with us, it wasn’t.

At nine-thirty we went outside and sat on hay bales to watch the fireworks. I could see Kelseys head on Bobby’s shoulder, while Gwen and I sat stiffly beside each other, dutifully saying, “Oooh,” and, “Aaah.”

When it was time to say good night, I gave Gwen a quick hug and a little kiss, and I think we both understood we’d never be going out again.

I felt like a worm.
