CHAPTER 20

EGYPT

I stood behind Rome, waiting for him to unlock the door to his mother’s house. I had no idea why I was so nervous, but my heart was pounding through my chest. I swear I could see it beating as I looked down at my body. My hands were sweating and I felt like I couldn't breathe. Mothers and sons were tricky, and the way Rome spoke about his mother, I knew that they were close. Very close, and that made me nervous. On top of the fact that I had never met this woman before, I was being forced into staying at her home for the next few days.

Once Rome had the door open, he lifted our bags and waited for me to enter. He was right behind me, and after he placed them on the floor next to the door, he shut and locked it. I looked around, checking out my surroundings and it was beautiful. There were calming colors everywhere, burgundies and browns with hints of orange, and it smelled amazing. Earthy and welcoming. I wasn't quite sure what I was expecting, but his mother’s home immediately calmed me for a brief moment, until I realized that I still had to meet her.

“Stop looking like that. She’s going to love you. She’ll be mad at me for not telling her that you were coming, but you don't have to worry about that.” Rome kissed my cheek before taking my hand in his. We moved through the house until we reached the back and were standing outside what I assumed was her bedroom door.

He knocked, but opened it without waiting for an answer. Before I could object, I was face to face with a very beautiful woman who was easily Rome’s twin. She was sitting in a leather chair that sat in the corner of her room reading a book.

The surprise and excitement on her face when she laid eyes on her son made me smile also. It was contagious. “Romello, what are you doing here, and who is this with you?”

She was on her feet and in her son’s arms before he could answer. He hugged her for what seemed like forever before she broke away and then pulled me into her chest to do the same.

“This is Egypt. We’re staying with you for a few days,” Rome said, grinning at the sight of me standing face to face with his mother.

“Really? And I assume your phone doesn't work.” She peered at her son, but I could tell that she wasn't upset, which had me feeling a little more relieved.

“I wanted to surprise you, and if I told you that I was bringing Egypt, you would have driven me crazy trying to get every detail of her life down so that you could prepare for us. I didn't want you stressing.” He kissed his mother on the forehead and she playfully slapped his arm.

“There’s nothing wrong with making sure your guests are comfortable. You’re such a man, Romello.
