CHAPTER 29

When Savannah got back home, she hopped on her computer and typed “Madden Society” into Google. Hundreds of results popped up. Conspiracy theorists had made crazy claims about them, everything from the society being associated with the occult to members dictating the future of world policies. Interesting stuff. She kept reading.

Apparently there was a waiting list of five hundred people who wanted to join the society but hadn’t yet been granted membership. Only men were allowed to join, and the initial membership fee was ten thousand dollars. An additional $2,500 was expected in annual dues.

This was not a club for just any Joe off the street. This was a club for the wealthy, elite, and powerful. Past US presidents had been members, as well as philanthropists, CEOs, and inventors.

Leonard had made it sound as if he and Marti had discovered the names of some of the current members. Just how had they done that?

The Internet opened up a whole world of opportunities, so why not give it a shot, just for fun? She typed in “Madden Society Members.” More results popped up. Her eyes widened as she recognized many names, including Congressman Perkins and Dr. Lawson.

She leaned back in her chair. Even if this society did exist, if it wasn’t just a conspiracy theory, why in the world would one of the members try to kill Marti? That didn’t make sense. In Savannah’s estimation, members of the society were just an upscale version of a Moose Lodge or Rotary Club.

She rubbed her eyes, tired of this online research. She flipped off her computer and rose. Just then her cell phone rang. She recognized Clive’s number. Her heart quickened, much to her dismay.

“Hey, what’s going on?”

“I’ve got food to cook and no one to eat it with.”

“Sounds like you have problems.” She couldn’t help but smile.

“Want to come join me? No pressure or expectations. Just two people having dinner together.”

Some of the tension left her. Though Landon had extended similar invitations in the past, Clive’s, for some reason, captured her. Besides, she could use a listening ear. “No strings attached sounds great.”

“See you in an hour?”

“An hour.”

She realized she was smiling when she hung up and immediately scolded herself. She wasn’t looking for romance. She didn’t even want to give romance another shot. That’s why this seemed like a bad, bad idea.

Sighing, she stood. She had to clean herself up. She took a quick shower, dried off, and dressed in jeans and a lightweight baby-blue sweater. As she blow-dried her hair, she looked in the mirror and frowned at the light dancing in her eyes. She almost looked excited. And the fact that she cared what she looked like only served to disturb her further. What was wrong with her?

She knew the answer. Deep inside, she found Clive Miller intriguing. And handsome. Mysterious. All the right ingredients for disaster.

She’d just have to be on guard, that was all there was to it. She shrugged her confusion off, brushed on some lip gloss, and went downstairs.
