Chapter Nine
Olivia followed her aunt and sister into the townhouse as she smothered a yawn. Theyâd attended the musical evening Sarah had talked about, for it seemed that Oliviaâs sudden engagement to the biggest scandal ton had seen in years had opened a few doors previously closed to them. No doubt the ton wished to gawk and gossip, but it didnât matter. Her sister finally had a chance at a future.
Now, as the longcase clock in the drawing room chimed the eleventh hour, she yawned again. The sooner she could fall into bed, the sooner she could think about what Lewis had made her feel and experience last night. A delicious tingle lanced down her spine. Heâd only stopped because sheâd become angry, but what would have happened had she kept her temper? And what had made him do such a thing to begin with? She didnât know, but she wanted another taste... or to run her hands over his bare chest. Turnabout was fair play in these types of situations, no?
Stop, Olivia. If you let him distract you, youâll never reach your goal.
Oh, but what heâd done had opened her eyes to a whole different world, and the problem with giving her a treat was sheâd crave another one. It had been her downfall as a young girl with the tea tray, and if her curves were any indication, she hadnât curbed that impulse. Apparently, Lewis was having the same effect.
A slow smile curved her lips. Yes, she wanted another kiss from the enigmatic, reclusive duke as well as an explanation. Oddly enough, sheâd missed him today, had thought he would have called after events of last night, as a devoted fiancé should. But he hadnât called or sent a note. Perhaps he already regretted their partnership... or her lack of response to his erotic attentions.
Oh, bugger. How am I to navigate these confusing waters? Itâs difficult enough to focus on what needs to be done.
âExcuse me, Miss Beaumont.â The butler appeared with a footman to take their outer garments. âThere is a missive for you.â Fletcher handed a sealed envelope to Olivia. âIt arrived thirty minutes past.â
âThank you, Fletcher.â She broke the unremarkable wax seal and then removed the single sheet of stationery that bore the Duke of Skeffingtonâs familiar crest. âHow exceedingly odd.â But her heartbeat accelerated.
Dear Miss Beaumont,
