Chapter 18

Drake

We can’t stay here. We all know that.

Like every home any of us have ever made, the cave we smoothed out of the cliff face by pure determination and scraps of energy isn’t safe anymore.

Now that the City sorcerer is dead, we have to assume the witch knows. Why else would he have been here? It’s a nasty surprise that she’s working with the City; normally witches want nothing to do with their greed or their cold textbook magic.

“We need a new plan.” I keep my voice down, not wanting to bother Lissa.

She’s near the back of the cave, gathering herself. I feel awful for making her freak out like this, without any kind of evidence that what she thinks is the truth.

I don’t know if her sister is here. It’s possible someone slipped between the worlds and grabbed her without us knowing. But it’s also possible something awful and entirely human happened.

Hearing that Lissa was found as a baby only confirms my suspicions: she’s from this world, not Earth. And my dragon has never bowed to anyone—even before the Fall.

Lissa is something special, whether she knows it or not. Trouble is, she can’t use all the power that comes with that. And right now, that’s what we need.

Gale follows my gaze to Lissa and lowers his voice. “Why?” He crouches near the cave entrance so we can all huddle together.

“Our old plan won’t work,” I mutter.

Gale raises his eyebrows. “Won’t it?”

“No.” I shoot him a glare.

“Strongly spoken for a man who was prepared to throw me into the pool bodily if I objected once more to the last plan. Which was created by you.” Gale’s eyes sparkle with mischief. Nothing wrong with his memory.

I bite my lip as frustration tangles with amusement in my chest. Gale has a way of inducing that potent mix in people, until they aren’t sure if they want to slap him or kiss him. “Shut up,” I tell him, ignoring him as he raises his hands as if to say, What, me? I look at Clay instead.

“We do have a responsibility to Lissa,” he says gravely. “Are there any other options?”

We all fall silent, thinking about it. I’ve racked my brain for hours, and I keep running into the same problem. The only thing we can do is send her away—maybe ask Sota for help—but where can she run if the City is hunting her? We can’t ask Sota to sacrifice herself, too, and she’s not strong enough to fight off their might singlehandedly.

If Lissa were skilled at using her strength, matters might be different, but we’re here now. No point in ifing and buting.

I nod and reach inside to speak again, touching their minds directly. Lissa doesn’t know what she can do, and we have to keep it that way.

Locke’s brows rise. Do we?

I glare at him. Yes. After meeting Sota, I have no doubt Lissa’s smart enough to work out that she has Fae powers. But the rest of it? No. I won’t see our queen turned into a savage fighter like the rest of us.
