Delilah

The Zmaj is against me, and I feel his body stiffen. Swallowing hard, I slowly turn my head and look over my shoulder. It's like a horror movie. The anticipation is almost as bad as the reveal.

Almost.

I have no trouble finding what made the sound. Glowing red eyes stare at me. Big glowing red eyes that don't need to blink. I blink, almost in response to that unrelenting stare. My eyes adjust and I try to look past those giant orbs to the thing they belong to. The Zmaj whirls us around and lets me go. Again, placing himself between me and danger.

I can't stop staring at it. Those eyes are set in the sides of a roughly triangle-shaped head bigger than the Zmaj, punctuated with slits at the nose and a longer, thin slit for the mouth. A long, black tongue slithers out of that slit, a hissing sound coming from the reptilian creature. As it makes the sound, two long flaps of leathery skin unfurl on either side of the head, framing it. A display of aggression, I'm willing to bet.

Its long, sinuous body is covered in a sheen of reddish scales, punctuated with darker brown swirls along its hide. It's thick, too thick for me to get my arms around it. At least a meter in diameter.

I follow the curved line of its body through the cave, trying to find the end. I don't find it. Some of it is still inside the hole it came through. The hole we started by grabbing rocks from the cave-in to try to get out of this place.

The noise we made must have alerted this thing that there was prey nearby. He crouches, grabbing his lochaber and moving closer to the… snake? It feels weird to call it that, but that's what it looks like. A giant-ass snake.

"Why'd it have to be snakes?" I mutter to myself, shaking my head, chuckling at the reference.

It’s not that I’m not scared, I’m terrified. I don’t know what else to do with the fear. Those cold, red eyes flick to me at my slight movement, the thing’s head bobbing hypnotically in the air.

The Zmaj creeps closer, moving smooth and low, the lochaber held across both hands, like a staff. One second, the giant head is barely moving, shifting slowly. The next, it's darting at the Zmaj, so fast it's a blur of movement.

I gasp, my heart in my throat. The Zmaj leaps away just before the head reaches him, and his lochaber whistles through the air, slicing the snake's cheek. The snake hisses, and its mouth unhinges revealing long, sharp fangs.

I gulp, looking down the barrel of that mouth, into the dark depths of its gullet. It's big enough to swallow even the Zmaj whole.

Unfortunately, even I can see that the slice the Zmaj landed was only superficial. All it did was irritate the thing.

Unthinking I take a step forward as it strikes again, but stop myself, fear, anger, all overridden by a desire to help.
