“Comin’ in hot, dumbass,” I roar as I shoot down another military drone with a devastatingly accurate streak of white-hot flame that damn near vaporizes the sucker. “Hah! Imagine the look on that nerd sitting in the command center somewhere in Virginia and seeing his deadly little toy popped like a fucking balloon. You all right back there, babe?”

“Yes!” Bonnie shouts from just behind my ear. She jumped on and grabbed a hold of one of my massive scales the moment I Changed. She knew I’d need my talons to be free for maneuverability while I’m dog-fighting twenty killer drones. And the tiny Dragon that’s growing in her is already giving her the strength she needs to hang on as I twist and turn, dive and climb, spin and shoot like this is the wild fucking west. “Kill ‘em all, Wild-Bill Brogan! Yee-haw!”

I screech with laughter, taking out another helpless drone and sending it to the great junkyard in the sky. Their tiny guns can’t deliver enough firepower to pierce my scaly armor, and I’m careful to always stay above them so Bonnie is well out of the line of fire. Their bullets can take out small planes and most ground targets, but they feel like grains of rice on my thick scales.

But then I hear a throaty rumble from my left, and I twist in the air instinctively. Immediately I see that there’s a new drone on the scene.

Bigger wings.

Bigger engines.

Bigger guns.

“OK, shit just got real,” I growl, twisting again and straining to climb fast and steep so I can circle above it and come in for the kill-shot. This sucker’s got armor-piercing shells—the kind of stuff that can take out a tank in a couple of strikes. My armor is stronger than a tank’s, but it would still hurt a little before I heal up. “Hang on, babe. Just gonna pulverize ten million dollars worth of taxpayer money. Not that I care, since I don’t pay taxes, but still.”

“So I should add tax evasion to the list of crimes?” Bonnie coos in my ear. “Hmm, you really know how to get a banker all hot and bothered. Hurry and take care of these annoying bugs, honey. Because I don’t know how long I can—”

Her words are drowned out by a sound from above, and I screech in anger when I realize that I wasn’t paying attention and there’s a second tank-buster drone that managed to somehow get above me! Now I’m flanked from above and below, and Bonnie’s exposed!

Immediately I send a plume of thick, dark smoke from my nostrils, hopefully obscuring the drones’ cameras even though I’m almost certain the technology uses infra-red and so the smoke won’t do shit. I follow it up with a scorching blast of Dragonfire, spraying above and below, sending massive amounts of heat at the metal-and-fiberglass birds that are threatening my mate.

I hear one of the drones explode, and I grin as I wait for the second pop. Then I hear something, but it’s not an explosion.
