WAKING UP THE NEXT morning felt like waking up from a really hot, really passionate dream. For a moment, I thought it really all had been a dream because I woke up alone. I stretched, looking around, and then I realized that I wasn’t at home. I wasn’t with Candy.

I was with him.

“It was real,” I whispered. I pinched myself, which hurt terribly, and I realized that it really was happening.

I’d gotten married.

I was a bride.

No, I was a wife. That’s what I was now. I was someone’s wife. I was Jax’s wife.

I was going to have to figure out what being a wife was actually like now. I was going to have to figure out all of the stuff that went into being married.

Jax and I were going to have plenty of time together, but I was old enough to know that things didn’t always go as planned. In fact, a lot of the time, they went the opposite of the way we planned.

I was going to have to be really, really careful if I wanted to make sure that Jax and I were able to work out. Even though this relationship was supposed to be “fake,” I knew we were still going to have to work together to make it seem real.

I knew I couldn’t let myself get swept up and away with all of the romance and wonder, but I also knew that it was probably too late for all of that.

Jax wasn’t in bed, so I got up and headed to the en-suite bathroom. Pushing open the door, I walked inside and looked around. It really was such a pretty space. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the trees beyond the house. A huge tub stretched from one side of the room to the other. This wasn’t even the master bedroom, as far as I knew, and there was an enormous walk-in shower, too.

That was where I headed first. I turned the water on as hot as it would go. While the water warmed, I pilfered through the bathroom looking for guest toothbrushes. Surely, there had to be some. I finally found a pack hidden away in one of the drawers, along with an assortment of what looked like hotel shampoo and conditioner sets. I wondered if the housekeeper took to keeping this room perfectly guest-ready.

It didn’t feel like Jax’s room yet. I knew he would probably personalize it as the year progressed. It was our first day living at the mansion, after all. Even though it was a furnished place, it seemed like everything here was either his grandfather’s or like it belonged to the family in some way.

After I’d brushed my teeth and managed to somewhat detangle my hair, I climbed into the shower, adjusted the heat so I wasn’t burning myself, and then proceeded to space out for the next half hour.

It really was an incredible adventure, I thought.

Being able to live among the dragon shifters felt kind of crazy, but kind of wonderful.
