Chapter 52

Jewel

I stood at the window, watching the other dragons fly as I did almost every hour I was awake. Adam’s plan with the sedatives seemed to be working. He had shown me how to give myself a lower dose yesterday, and while the cramps and tremors had returned; they were not as bad. Mark wasn’t here and his absence made me nervous. Though even when he was here, he wouldn’t tell me what I was supposed to do, and that made me nervous too. How could I do what he expected of me if he didn’t tell me? Every moment that passed made me certain I’d earn a punishment, but he continued to be kind and gentle with me. One of the females, Sophia had spent a good deal of time with me yesterday and explained about this strange pull making me feel I had to be near him but there were times it tugged me in a different direction, usually when he wasn’t with Joshua. Mark was my new owner, but he didn’t seem to want to be. Maybe it was best that he didn’t. If Langley found out, he would kill Mark. That sent more waves of nervousness through me, because if Langley ever got me back . . . I shuddered at the thought.

Concern soothed a little of the anxiety. They told me I would feel his emotions and hear his thoughts, but I wasn’t sure it was him I was hearing. He was busy finishing his interview series. His determination to expose Langley confused, delighted, and terrified me. The thoughts that I heard didn’t sound like Mark. But I didn’t recognize the voice. No, I recognized it. It was the voice that told me to run and called me sweetheart. Was it Joshua? He didn’t really say much when he was with Mark, but he was always giving me encouraging looks. I turned, looking at the door. I had spent most of my time in this room, but a growing part of me wanted to venture out. Mark had said I could. One of the few things I knew I was allowed to do, but was it okay to go without him? He didn’t say it was, but he didn’t say I couldn’t either. I could just open the door. That wouldn’t be breaking the rules. Would it? I didn’t know.

I went to the door and placed a shaking hand on the knob and turned it, took a deep breath, and pulled it open. Scarlet, the female dragon who most often stood guard at my door, pushed away from the opposite wall, giving me a smile. “Something you need, darlin?”

“Mark,” the name was out of my mouth before I could even think about it, but it wasn’t really true. I wanted to see Joshua. But Joshua was his guard today. A strange feeling swept through me and it took time to recognize it, excitement.

“Come on, I’ll take you to him.”

“He said he was meeting with Enoch,” I said.
