Chapter Fifteen

“I will kill anyone who tries to take her from me.” Robbie’s words were spoken quietly, but no one present missed the edge of steel in its meaning. “Is my point taken?”

James held his ground a moment more then nodded and lowered his sword. “Then you are worthy. I will not stand in your way. The gift of her love will be yours. I know where I stand when it comes to you, but I could not in all faith, leave her in the care of someone that would not treasure her above his own life.”

The air was still charged. Nessa could feel Robbie’s struggle with the powers he held. She floundered for a moment, and her heart pounded at her temples. The feeling of menace was so strong she was terrified.

She moved up to stand beside him placing a hand over his heart. He visibly shuddered with her touch, and his dark gaze swung to pierce her and it sent her pulse racing all over again. Robbie’s arm came about her in a possessive gesture. He curled his arm tighter about her waist pulling her into his chest in a protective move. Once she was secured against him, his gaze moved back to James. Robbie smiled, yet there was no humor in it, only a subtle warning.

“I am known as Robert the Dark. I have no right to the name McKay.”

“I am James Balloch, second son to Laird Roy Balloch. If you ever have need of me, send word. My sword will be yours.” Though the words were spoken to Robert, James’ gaze rested on Nessa. “Now that my time is done here, I will bid you farewell.”

As he turned to leave, Nessa reached out and touched his arm. He turned back to her, and she saw the pain he could not hide. “May I walk you out?” she asked.

He gave a weak smile and nodded.

As she made to leave with James, Robbie squeezed her around the waist. Swinging around, she glanced back at Robbie. “I will not be long. I but go to bid a good friend farewell,” she offered in reassurance. Nessa didn’t pull away but waited for Robbie to give her some trust and free her on his own.

When he loosened his fingers, she knew it was a reluctant gift, yet given all the same. In return she gave him what she hoped was an encouraging smile. She wouldn’t misuse his gift. The bond between them would grow stronger with each experience.

Turning she left the hall with James, never glancing back toward the watching sorcerer. But his gaze burned a hole in her back. Its warmth sent a shiver of pleasure along her limbs.

Outside the silence between James and herself was deafening until they reached the stables and stopped.

He turned to her. “There is no reason to coddle me, Nessa.”

“I would not do such a thing to so grand a warrior as yourself. ’Tis insulting you would even think so.”

James sighed heavily. “I am in a foul temper.
