Chapter Thirteen

I wanted to bury my face into Egan’s massive chest and hide. I had an inkling it was Sadie who had caught us in our passionate embrace. I licked my lips, enjoying his lingering taste.

But I wouldn’t cower, not this time. I pulled away slightly, but Egan’s arm wrapped around my waist, anchoring me to him. He wanted me to stay close, and it thrilled me more than I’d ever admit.

“Is … uh …” Sadie grinned. “Is everything all right?”

“Really, babe?” Donovan chuckled and took her hand. “I’m thinking they’re more than okay.”

My face was on fire, so I changed the subject. “I’m sorry about earlier and the past few weeks. I’ve been rude to all of you, and it was uncalled for. I just got …” I paused, searching for the best word.

“Overwhelmed?” Donovan threw out. “Unsteady? Scared?”

That brought my struggle to light. It hadn’t been one thing but all three. “How did you know?”

He turned his focus on Sadie and took her hand. “Let’s just say you aren’t the only one who’s experienced something like this. It’s a lot at first.”

“You have a connection like this too?” I’d only read about stuff like this in books, and now I’d learned that another couple had this.

“Yes, we do.” Sadie nodded. “It was a similar situation to you and Egan; I knew there was a chance to have a connection this strong with someone, and Donovan had no clue. We fought the connection at first too.”

“She’s right.” Donovan scrunched his face. “I was a complete asshole.”

“I wasn’t much better.” Sadie kissed his cheek. “But we’ve made it, and that’s all that matters.”

I completely understood that sentiment.

“Roxy and the others told us to meet them at the Student Center.” Sadie lifted an eyebrow. “Do you two want to join us?”

“It’s up to Jade,” Egan said, his focus only on me.

My heart screamed no, but I’d been an ass to all of them. “Do you mind?”

“If that’s what you want, then of course I don’t.” He pressed his lips to mine. “Whatever I can do to make you happy.”

Okay, maybe I’d made the wrong call. We could be doing more of this instead, and honestly, I’d kind of prefer it.

Donovan laughed. “You better snatch her before she changes her mind.”

“Leave them alone,” Sadie chastised. “I’m thrilled for them.”

There was no way I could’ve fought this any longer. Each day had chipped my will away. Even if I hadn’t seen Amber all over him, I would’ve said screw it, just not nearly as fast. In a way, I was thankful she’d made me wake up sooner and put myself out of this misery.

“I need to do something about my raccoon eyes first.” I gestured to the pronounced bags under my eyes.

“Oh, I can help with that.” Sadie opened her purse and pulled out a makeup remover tissue. “Roxy makes me carry these around in case my makeup messes up. It does come in handy at times, but I’ll never admit it.”

Yeah, telling Roxy she was right would make her gloat for days.
