Chapter Sixteen

Matthew

While everyone else sleeps in, I have a meeting with the rest of the royal family first thing in the morning. I don’t give a second look to Adrian and Liam’s intertwined hands. I do not have time to get into that right now. I dress in an all black suit with no tie and pull my hair up into a ponytail. I check myself in the bathroom mirror, then look at Serenity one last time before heading out.

My eyes just might trace Adrian as well, but I don’t want to think about that. It’s too complicated.

“Your Majesties,” I say, striding into the royal dining room. I bow before joining the queen and her mates at the table. “You wanted to speak with me?”

I’m surprised that Amelie didn’t demand an audience with Liam, honestly. If she wants to know why Serenity yelled at her, she can just force him to tell her. The idea of that kind of power sends a shiver down my spine.

“Yes,” Henri says. His dreads are tied in a low ponytail, and he’s dressed similarly to me. We look like the enemy spies in a bad action movie. He sets his flatware on the table and folds his hands together. “We investigated your father’s home.” He hesitates, then says, “Your home.”

My breath catches in my throat. Am I in trouble for something? I knew my adoptive father was a terrible person, but the fact that he was part of a rebel group came as a complete shock to me. He’d always been at the beck and call of the crown. “And?”

Henri’s eyes never leave mine. He’s evaluating me. Testing me.

“We found nothing. It seems the man was good at covering his tracks.” Still, there’s something in his eyes.

“Tell us what you know,” Queen Amelie says, her tone frustrated. I face her for the first time this morning. She has dark circles around her eyes, and her hair has a million flyaways that indicate she hasn’t had it done today. And is that the same shirt as yesterday?

The command is irresistible, though, so I say, “I know what you know. Less, even.” I put my hands out in front of me, palms to the ceiling. “I hated my father, and he hated me. If there was anything to know, then he would never tell me.”

The queen stares me down, then nods. “You may go.”

I blink.

“That’s all?”

She frowns. “Is there more you wish to tell me?”

I open my mouth, then close it. Is there? I shake my head. “This meeting just isn’t what I expected.”

She shakes her head. “Apparently we’re all getting things we weren’t expecting these days.”

The anger in her tone throws me. I should turn around and leave, but the bitterness building up inside her tips my scales. “You know, you should be happy. Serenity is strong, despite everything that’s happened to her. She’s a survivor. And, frankly, I agree with her. You were wrong to send her away. She didn’t need some phony protection. She needed her family.
