Chapter 13

STAYING YOUNGER LONGER

YOUR FACE AT twenty is the result of your parents’ choices. Your face at eighty is the result of your own choices. Wrinkles or no wrinkles; that’s a sobering thought—and I’m not even talking about the more than $260 billion being spent every year on antiaging products and services.1

What is it that we fear about getting older? Loss of physical beauty? Loss of physical health? Loss of independence? Loss of mental capacity? Loss of time to accomplish or experience all we desire? All those fears look at aging as a series of losses. And perhaps in some ways that’s true. Just knowing the world will one day go on without us is a rather unpleasant thought.

The American poet Dylan Thomas expressed it this way:

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.2
