Evander

Iam not okay. I tried to find Greer after she ran off, but Stevie and Myra thought I should give her a minute and let her reach out to me. I have no idea what I did wrong, but I’m freaking out. According to them, I didn’t do anything, but that’s hard to believe when the subject of my most recent affection hasn’t called, texted, or reached out in any way for two days. I never got to explain what she saw with Kayla, which only adds to my worry. When the headlines keep comparing her to my ex, it’s got to be hard on her. And that kiss with Kayla? I hope Greer knows I didn’t want it. She’s supposed to meet a few of us at the rink this afternoon for practice, and if she doesn’t show, I don’t know what I’ll do.

The headlines are having a blast, and people speculate all over social media about the reason for her abrupt departure after that staring thing in the mud. I can’t speak for Greer, but for me, it was intense. I blinked, and my whole future stared back at me. All I ever wanted was right there, covered with mud, looking at me like she might want the same thing. The rest of the world fell away until those photographers got too close. Before that, though, wow.

I’ve never been in love. I’ve been in deep trouble with women before, but never in love. I’ve let them use me, abuse me, break my heart, but I’ve never let them have my whole heart.

Greer stole it like a bandit, but I’m afraid she might not want it. What if the headlines are right?

Darling Darts When Things Get Serious. Is this Kayla Knight all over again?

I pinch the bridge of my nose, working to stave off a headache. I want to reach out to her and make sure she’s okay, but what would I say? She’s probably seen the headlines, too, and that doesn’t help matters.

“You need to get out,” Turner says.

“Why are you always here? You have an apartment,” I say, annoyed that I can’t be left alone to brood in peace.

“It’s boring there. Let’s go get breakfast at the tavern.” He stands and stretches, then turns off the television. I wasn’t watching it, but it still breaks me back into reality when it goes dark.

He’s right. I need to get out.

“Hey, Aiden, wanna grab breakfast at the tavern?” Turner shouts down the hall where Aiden is folding laundry.

“Depends.” Aiden pops his head out of his room. “Does Evan plan to make a holy show of it again?”

I throw a shoe down the hallway. “Greer won’t even call me, so I doubt she’s out in public where we can fight again.”

Aiden’s teasing demeanor swiftly dissolves, and he heads down the hall. “You know, this thing between you is intense, friend. Maybe she needs a breather from the attention. It isn’t anything you’ve done wrong.”

He’s so confident, almost as if he knows something.
