Bartlesville

Robert missed the birth of our son, Ronald Ford Fletcher who was born in 1946 while I was still in Gallup, New Mexico. Aunt Florence was a tremendous help and I thank God for her and her wisdom. It was nice to be with her and around some family, but I longed for the people I called home. I wanted to return to Oklahoma. When I eventually regained my strength after the birth, I packed my few belongings, took my young son, and left Gallup.

After heavy consideration, I decided Bartlesville would be better than Tulsa. Even though it had been nearly twenty-five years since the massacre, it remained fresh to me, like a wound that refused to heal. Bartlesville, known for being the headquarters of Phillips Petroleum and Oil Company, was close enough and a place where I could plant new roots.

My older sister Jeurl was tormented by nightmares that continued to haunt her from Tulsa. They were always the same: the massacre, the blood, and a man being shot by a Klansman with a shotgun. I, too, was haunted by these same terrible memories. When I decided to move to Bartlesville after the war, instead of returning to Tulsa, Jeurl wanted to come with me and start anew. We ended up living on the same street, with our houses on opposite ends of the block. Our children played together and often stayed with each other. At one point, there were five families from our immediate family living on the same street.
