Epicyon, a canid the size of a large wolf, attacks a horned herbivore eight million years ago on what is now the American Great Plains. At left, fox-size Eucyon converge on a peccary. With a cooling climate, Epicyon and their large prey disappeared into extinction. But Eucyon, with teeth suitable for eating meat and plants, survived. Eucyon species eventually gave rise to Canis, the genus that includes today’s wolves and dogs. About 800,000 years ago, wolves migrated from Eurasia to today’s North American Arctic.
