The next day, Juliana had a little extra swing in her step, and it didn’t take long for Kate to notice.

“That doctor must be treating you right, huh?” Kate said with a grin.

“He sure does,” Juliana said, and she told Kate all about the dinner and the proposal, and she showed off her ring.

Every time Juliana saw her ring, she smiled. Quinn had gone out of his way to make it special for her. She hadn’t expected a ring at all, and then he’d done his best to incorporate something meaningful for both of them. Last night, she’d been intimate with him, and she didn’t regret it one bit. She still wasn’t sure if that was good or bad, but it had been an amazing experience.

As she filled drinks and brought food to tables, she ran her thumb over the ring, feeling the raised part where the diamond was and the etched in curves of the Celtic knots.

As the days went by, she and Kate became friends, not just boss and employee, and Juliana came to enjoy her time at the Bluebonnet Cafe.

A week after her engagement, during the lunch rush, she took an order for a group of firemen. As she turned to go back to the kitchen, her eyes stopped on a man sitting alone in a booth at the back of the restaurant.

She didn’t move a muscle.

Her heart slammed into her chest. That wasn’t just any man. It was Anton.

From Boston.

She had no idea what his last name was. He’d always just been called his first name. He’d worked for her parents as a bodyguard years ago and then moved on to work in one of their warehouses.

If she’d been holding a tray, it would be on the floor. As it was, the pen she held slipped from her fingers and hit the tile. Hands shaking, she bent down to pick it up. She wasn’t going to slink away. She was going to go over there and confront him. He was intimidating, and she was freaked out, but she wasn’t going to run. Pen in hand, she stood up straight and took a step forward toward the man.

Before she could get closer, someone tapped her on the shoulder. Juliana jumped, startled. She turned to see an older woman, who said, “Ma’am. Do you have a restroom I can use?”

“Um. Yes. It’s over here. I’ll show you.”

Juliana glanced over her shoulder, where Anton still sat. She showed the woman the restroom, and the woman thanked her profusely. When she got back, Anton was gone. Vanished.

Juliana ran forward, not bothering to try to look normal. She ran out the front door. In the distance, a car drove down the road. Was that him? The car was too far away to see the license plate.

As soon as she was back inside, she found Kate. “I need to use the restroom.”

“Go ahead. I’ll cover your table.”

In the restroom, she used her watch to text Quinn.

Another one showed up here at the cafe.
