How to say no without feeling bad

It can be hard to say no, but here are some ways to make it easier. Sometimes you want to say ‘no’, sometimes you want to say ‘no, not right now’ and sometimes you might want to say ‘maybe’.

I’m sorry, but I can’t commit to this right now.

Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you. Note: This is more like a maybe, but buys you time if you’re not sure if you want to do it or have the time to do it.

I don’t think I’m the best person to help you, but perhaps you could try . . . [suggest someone else]

I can’t do it right now, but I could schedule some time . . . [suggest a date]

I can’t do this, but I can . . . [suggest an alternative]

I’m sorry, as much as I’d like to, I just don’t have the time.

I’d love to do this, but I can’t because . . . [give a good reason]

Sorry, this isn’t something I’m able to do.

If the request is something more simple, such as meeting for a coffee, you can still say no firmly, but politely. Honesty is always the best policy. The most important thing to remember is that whenever you say no to something you don’t want to do, or don’t have the time to do, you’re making room to say yes to something you really do want to do.
