MY WEEK STARTS off badly when the first thing I see as I round the corner of the cafeteria is Madison in a lip-lock with Brittany. I try to rush off before they see me but no such luck. The rest of my day goes downhill from there.

I can’t find my homework for math and have to take a zero as my grade. Then I lose my wallet out of my backpack. I run into Nicholas, who treats me like I have the plague—my life sucks right now.

I’m so ready for the bell to ring so that I can go home and relax. The sooner I get this day over with the better I’ll feel.

My prayers are answered forty-five minutes later, when school lets out.

But my streak of bad luck continues.

From the moment I arrive home from school, it becomes clear that she’s got it in for me.

“Divine, you had a package arrive from some store in Los Angeles,” Aunt Phoebe announces as soon as I step into the kitchen.

I jump up and down in my excitement. My day isn’t so bad after all. “I’ve been waiting on that.”

“You’re gonna have to send some of that stuff back. It’s too old for you. What in the world were you thinking ordering that mess?”

“You opened my package?” I can’t believe she invaded my privacy like that. She had no right to open up my stuff.

Aunt Phoebe pulls up to her full height. “I sure did. Why?”

“I don’t think that’s right. It was addressed to me. I know you wouldn’t like me opening up your stuff.”

Aunt Phoebe dismisses my comments with the wave of her hand. “I’m not the child around here. This is my house and I have every right to see what you were ordering. Now you know good and well I’m not gon’ let you walk around in those see-thru shirts.” Her expression changes to one of disgust. “I don’t even think Kara would let you wear that mess. What you planning on doing? Going to work on the street somewhere?”

I’m still tripping off the fact that she opened my package in the first place. Then she has the nerve to say that I’m trying to dress like some streetwalker—no she didn’t.

She still walking around fussing. “And those skirts—you gon’ wear something under them? ’Cause they barely reach your panties. Girl, what you thinkin’?”

I’m thinking you need to mind your own business.

“That stuff cost way too much money and you don’t even get enough material to cover up anything.” Inclining her head, Aunt Phoebe asks, “How’d you pay for this stuff anyway?”

“I had it put on my mom’s account.”

“Well, you can just have it taken right back off. This stuff is going back to that store.”

It’s no use arguing with Aunt Phoebe so I just storm off to my room. There’s no point in calling Mom either because she’d side with Aunt Phoebe and probably fuss me out for using her account without permission.

I stay in my room until dinnertime to avoid any more scenes with Aunt Phoebe.
