Chapter Fourteen

If Elizabeth thought one day would be enough time for her mother to forgive her, she could not have been more wrong. Even Mr. Collins continued to show Elizabeth disfavor in his own special way. At the breakfast table he stared bitterly at her and chewed his eggs with his mouth wide open, like a cow. Every time Elizabeth looked in his direction, he quickly turned his head to avoid her gaze. After the tenth time she cleared her throat. “So, do you plan on going home early then, Mr. Collins? I’m sure you must be missing Lady Catherine. How she can survive without your ‘paradigm of virtue and submission’ is beyond me.”

Mr. Collins managed to smile back as he replied calmly, “I am confident that Lady Catherine intends for her commission for myself to be fulfilled, and I will not fail her. To leave Saturday was the plan from the beginning. I will spend my remaining time seeking for myself a wife from amongst the rest of the young ladies of Hertfordshire. One whose grace and beauty must exceed that of my initial choice.”

“Yes, well, be sure to bring plenty of alcohol,” Elizabeth deadpanned. “You might have better luck if these exceedingly beautiful women were inebriated. Although, even drunk vision can’t fix a bad personality.” Elizabeth asked to be excused and left the room, as she had to get out of the house, away from Collins. She had to talk to someone. Jane was obviously out of the question, and she didn’t want to confide in Charlotte for some reason. Maybe it was because she seemed to like Collins so much. So, who was left?

Mr. Wickham.

She would walk to Meryton, find Mr. Wickham, and tell him everything that happened with Mr. Bingley. He was probably the only one who could understand how she was feeling anyway.

Elizabeth set out for Meryton after breakfast, along with Jane, Lydia, Kitty, and Mary, who had eagerly chosen to walk with her. The town was overflowing with soldiers, and Elizabeth felt discouraged as to ever finding Mr. Wickham among the crowd. Finally, she noticed him flirting hard with a group of women. She caught his eye, and he smiled as she shook her head in mock disapproval. He excused himself and crossed the street to greet her and her sisters. Lydia and Kitty were thrilled to see him and begged him to join them on their errand to deliver a letter from Mrs. Bennet to their aunt. Elizabeth, who had not previously known about the letter, assumed it was probably written to inform their aunt of her familial betrayal.

As they headed further down the street Lydia and Kitty found a ribbon shop and bolted inside. Jane followed to make sure they didn’t spend all their money, leaving Elizabeth and Mr. Wickham alone to talk outside the door of the shop.

“How are you, Miss Elizabeth?”

“I’m OK,” Elizabeth lied. “I missed you at the Netherfield ball.”

“Yes,” he replied, shuffling his weight from one foot to the other.
