CHAPTER 13
Ciara woke up and felt the all-too familiar sensation of being over-bled once more. Darius was ravenous again yesterday, and she bore the signs of it today. She felt weak, dizzy, and didnât have enough enthusiasm to go shopping with her mother and sister today. She felt anger towards Darius and wanted to get into it with him as he had promised her that he wouldnât do this anymore, but he was sleeping in his coffin.
She looked at her cell phone. It was noon already. She hated to call and cancel at the last minute, but there was no way she could do another day of shopping.

âWhat do you mean you canât come? Genevieve is already dressed and ready to go. Weâre both waiting for you. She raced home from school for us to make sure we had at least two hours.â
âMom, Iâm not feeling well and Iâm afraid to drive again.â
âCiara, donât start in about not being able to drive. You were driving last week. You can drive today. Youâre being thoughtless.â
âAll right. Iâll be right over.â Ciara hung up. She couldnât get over her anger towards Darius. She hated it when he bled her to the point of exhaustion.
Not having any time to focus on the injustice of it all, or what she could do about it, she threw on the same clothes she wore yesterday and arranged her hair into a sloppy bun. As she looked into the mirror, she thought, âIf she says another word about my being pale, I swear I am turning around and coming home.â
She pulled out her cosmetics bag and put on foundation and tried covering the dark circles under her eyes with concealer. She did the best she could. She added blush to make her cheeks look pink, but when she was done, she thought she merely took on the look of a street walker. âI just need to make it through two hours of shopping. I can do this.â

~ MEANWHILE ~
As Elizabeth hung up the phone, she turned to Genevieve. âI thought she was going to start in with that black ice again.â She put her hands over her ears and cringed. âI canât listen to it anymore.â
âShe told me thatâs over. Darius said it doesnât happen after mid-February.â Genevieve watched as her mother tried to shift into a better mood. âRelax, Mom. Chill out.â
âShe was her old self last week, wasnât she?â Elizabeth sounded positive again, but she was merely acting for the benefit of Genevieve.
âShe was. She was calm and excited about the wedding. Maybe theyâve been busy at the funeral home again.â
âOh, please. She answers phones for four hours a night and her boyfriend is her boss. How many calls could come in during that time? How exhausting could it be?â
âTry not to get mad, Mom,â said Genevieve cautioning her mother.
âYouâre right. I have to contain myself.â
âIs she going to meet us here or in the garage?â
âI donât know. Letâs stay here just to make sure she actually shows up.
