The Mayo Clinic has over 500,000 patient visitors every year at three sites of Rochester in Minnesota, Scottsdale in Arizona and Jacksonville in Florida.
The Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit medical practice and medical research group. It is a progressive national motivator for public health. Its long history of service as a symbol of quality for the national and international community has been a model to the nation. Its continuous update of important aspects of life and health information has been a truly inspiring cornerstone for the globe as well as the USA. One of the missions of the Mayo Clinic is quality and professionalism in their practice. As a university it educates the best graduates and leads with new disciplines and new innovations for practical ends in the profession of medical practice. To this effect the Mayo Clinic has said: ‘In 2009, the U.S. News and World Report magazine named Mayo Clinic a best hospital for 20th straight year, and ranked number 2 in the Honour Roll’. In this chapter, the basic reason for the success of Mayo Clinic is studied by use of the concept of systems ethics. The initial development of systems ethics in Taiwan is presented first. Then, a brief review of the history of the Mayo Clinic is made. Finally, my own actual experiences as a patient in the Mayo Clinic are used to support the study.
Due to the vast number of clinical cases, for example Mayo Clinic's list of diseases is so far 1153 (MayoClinic, 2011) and growing. For our limited volume we resist mentioning, let alone discussing all possible or complicated specialised operative cases of medical applications of DSS for which we limit our discussion to selective cases in four distinct application areas of post operation, heart surgery, dental surgery and scalp surgery. Where the significance of the DSS solution upon featured sensors, actuators in integration with other common and specialised equipment and devices can be appreciated. In order to develop a systematic style unified solution for integrating sensors, actuators used for medical surgery and other clinical surgical applications we need to examine, individually and collectively, their effectiveness and their requirement to possess certain features considering the following aspects of the solution.
Broadly speaking, the whole system needs to be reliable. Trust in a system to help with a clinical operation or post-operative observation of a critically important health process is vital. It should possess the security requirements of data against being tampered with or abused, resilience against any errors caused by the media, fault tolerant and free from human-errors. It is prepared and able to reject or tolerate any possible or unforeseeable error, or interference from the media, or other devices or associated systems.
Designed to fit the application well, any extra, redundant or non-fully utilised device could become a bottleneck for a tedious operation whilst it consumes/occupies the limited space (and time) available to the experts and their team for the main operation. Also, any little mistakes or emission of an irrelevant action or
