Chapter Ten

Emma’s heartbeat raced as she followed him along the corridor. Every few feet, he kept stopping in order to kiss her, and each one he treated her to became steadily more heated and raw. They fed the desire that had turned her blood to fire until she had no idea what she was doing nor where she was.

“Ewan, shouldn’t we—”

He cut off her words with yet another kiss, only this time he pinned her against the wall and shoved her arms above her head, holding her wrists in one of his big hands. Then he ravaged her mouth as if he were a Viking and she held a secret store of treasure. The experience overwhelmed her senses; all she knew was Ewan and the feel of his body layered on hers, the heat of him while he chased her tongue with hers, the crisp, clean scent of him as cupped the side of her neck with his free hand, drew the pad of his thumb along her jawline in an effort to tilt her head and deepen the embrace.

When he finally released her wrists, Emma put her arms about his shoulders, and all the while she kissed him back, mimicked what he did to her. When they’d sparred with swords, her awareness of him had spiked, but the second they talked about kilts and passion and she’d spied the evidence of his regard, the rest of her guard had lowered. For good or for ill, she’d welcomed him, had flirted with him a bit, and when he’d kissed her, she rode the wave of euphoria that followed.

“What are you doing to me?” he whispered against the shell of her ear moments before he picked her up and carried her into a nearby room.

“How can I answer that definitively when I’m as confused as you are?” She murmured a protest when he set her back on her feet. While he busied himself with closing the door, Emma glanced about what appeared to be a bedroom. At least that’s what she gathered by looking at the furniture that had been covered with dust sheets. “Where are we?”

“Back when my grandfather was laird, this was his suite of rooms. Bedchamber, dressing room, private sitting room, and a study.” He stalked toward her, his blue eyes glittering in the gloom. “Shall we carry on, then?”

“Don’t you want to light a candle?” Oh, he was potent indeed. All they’d done thus far was kiss and already her knees were weak and the throbbing between her thighs remained constant.

“In this moment, I only want you, lass. Whatever it is between us, I have not the strength to fight it any longer.”

Then she was in his arms once more, his lips on hers, his hands seemingly everywhere.

If he hadn’t the strength, she certainly didn’t, and she offered no protest when he removed her dress in a twinkling. The act was made more impressive since he didn’t cease kissing her through most of it. She had his waistcoat free while he worked the laces of her stays.
