Dropping Our Defenses

Do you see yourself as a participant in any of the above behaviors? In your responses to conflict, have you recognized any of these traits coming to the surface? It is much easier to use one of these defense mechanisms than to confront our issues. Yet when we persist in putting up defense mechanisms, we rob ourselves of the opportunity to find our real identity (made in God’s image)—as opposed to living in a false identity (man’s image and how we think people view us).

If we overuse defense mechanisms, we stay stuck in our dysfunction and do not experience the freedom and abundant life that Jesus already purchased for us. We must drop our defenses and allow Him to transform us from the inside out. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth, and listening to Him will set us free, however painful it may be to face our issues.

In the next chapter, we will look at how continuing in our passivity ultimately robs us of our identity. However, we will also see that like King David, we can ward off identity theft and reclaim our identity as children of God.
