CHAPTER TWELVE

The warm spring sun shone down through the bedroom window and landed directly into Kaden’s eyes. He opened them and felt the warmth of its rays as it bathed life saving energy down onto him. The birds had returned now and he could hear them squawking to each other. He thought of the snow bird which had followed him on that dreadful day on the mountain. He wondered to himself how it spent the summer months.

Brummell was lying at the foot of Kaden’s bed; he must have instinctively known how desperately Kaden was missing his own family right now. Dogs somehow knew what goes on in people’s heads, he thought, which always amazed him. The feel of Brummell’s warm fur and the look of love in his eyes seemed to have the power to help Kaden fight off the worry about his family. While the Farnsworth family had offered him a safe haven, they continued on with their lives and seemed busy and happy, while. Brummel seemed more attuned to Kaden’s inner feeling that he was going nowhere fast. He couldn’t remain here in limbo forever, Kaden thought. He felt the inner urge to try and change things for his family and help Rachael escape his father, whether she had already been forced to marry him or not. It had been the only thought that kept him moving out on the mountain, instead of just giving up. He just didn’t know how he was going to go about doing it.

Kaden stretched and realized he was not hurting everywhere, for the first time in about two months. His fingers were still discolored but he was able to use them more and more. The doctor told him to take it easy, as his body started getting back to normal again. He had been vacuuming the floors, folding clothes and drying the dishes, babysitting Gunner, trying to do all he could to help Ruth. Movement was coming more easily for him, now, and he had decided last evening that he would try and venture outside and help Bob with the milking. Tomorrow morning he was determined to get up and help Bob.

Kaden’s heart raced merrily as he listened for Bob’s alarm clock at four thirty in the morning. Walking was still a challenge but with the exception of his two little toes continuing to ache, he felt pretty much back to normal.

He wanted to give Bob a hand, since he knew Bob did most of the chores alone. His son, Jeremy, went to a Bible class, early in the morning, at one of their church member’s house. Since he did this every school morning, he was unable to help his dad with the milking. Ruth drove him to the class and then waited for him so that after the Bible class was over, she could take him to school, where he rode the bus home, after school.

Kaden felt the family was very religious, the same as his own family was, only, the way they went about things concerning their religion was a little different.
