New York, 2010

At 5:45 a.m., fifty-three minutes after he started casting glances at his alarm clock, Alex decided to get out of bed. The alarm was set to go off in another fifteen minutes anyway, and he just didn’t feel he could stay prone any longer.

He put the covers back in place and then, standing naked on his side of the bed, he watched Angélica’s still form. She was curled away from him on the far edge of the king-size bed. From this perspective, it seemed as though she were yards away. She hadn’t stirred while he had been tossing for most of the past hour, and she didn’t budge now.

He stepped toward the bathroom, turning one more time to glance at Angélica. She’d never refused him sex before. She hadn’t technically done so last night – only a few hours ago, actually – but he was certain of what would have happened if he’d tried to seduce her. It didn’t require second sight to understand the signals she was sending out when he slipped in next to her after the party had ended.

Exhaling slowly, he went into the bathroom and started the shower. He took a little longer than he normally did under the water this morning. Lathering his hair with Sisley Botanical shampoo, he massaged his scalp for several minutes. He rarely allowed himself a luxury like this, but he had extra time before his driver arrived, and he imagined that the showers at the ashram were likely to be designed for function rather than comfort.

When he was finished, he wrapped himself in his cashmere micro cotton bath sheet without either toweling himself off or getting out of the shower. He felt water dribbling down his ankles and pooling around his feet. For several minutes, he held this pose, the inaction feeling both like a rare pleasure and like the only appropriate option. Then he finished getting ready to leave the apartment.

The mirror in the bathroom had steamed from the excessive run of hot water in the shower. While he brushed his teeth, he opened the door dividing the bathroom from the bedroom to let the humidity drop. He wouldn’t normally do such a thing with Angélica still asleep for concerns about waking her, but he was uncomfortable. He needn’t have worried in this case, though. When he came out of the bathroom fully dressed, she was still huddled on her edge of the bed.

He watched her intently for a long minute. A lock of her ebony hair had fallen over her eye, both underlining the peacefulness of her repose and sending subtle reminders of her allure. Angélica was a different kind of beautiful from any other woman he’d known. Her beauty pulled at him. Even now, when she was keeping her distance from him.

Drawing his eyes away from the woman he loved, he looked at the alarm clock on his night stand. He’d allowed himself considerably more time than he usually took to get ready. The excess minutes his early awakening afforded had evaporated, and now it was time to get going.
