VPA troops dragging a 105mm howitzer up a jungle hillside to be emplaced on a forward slope. Building each battery’s four casemates, five bunkers, and linking trenches took about 200 men up to 15 days to complete. Each casemate required the digging out of 7,000–10,000 cubic feet of earth, and the assembly of foot-thick timbers cut a mile or two away so as not to reveal felling around the position. Each casemate had at least 9 feet of earth and timber overhead cover, and dummy casemates were also built to draw French fire. The gun was fully enclosed, apart from an embrasure that was covered with moveable sandbags and carefully recamouflaged with unscorched foliage between shoots. This enormous effort was almost entirely successful in frustrating French observation and counter-battery fire. (Collection Jean-Claude Labbe/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images)
