CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
KATE
I petted Peanut absentmindedly as I stared out the window, houses and buildings a blur as they passed.
Gavin reached over and squeezed my knee. âStill not talking to me?â
I shifted my legs to shake him off but didnât bother to respond. Hell yes, I was still mad. I was pissed that he had so expertly manipulated me into doing exactly what he wanted, and I wasnât nearly ready to forgive and forget just yet. Though the idea of spending the night alone in an empty house wasnât exactly appealing, I had several other options. I couldâve stayed in a hotel or, barring that, I had friends in the area or couldâve gone to my parentsâ house.
âWe both know this is completely unnecessary,â I snapped.
âI disagree.â Gavin settled his elbow on the console between us, cautious to avoid jostling my arm. âWe both know itâs a big deal; you just donât like being told what to do.â
âNo kidding,â I drawled and rolled my eyes.
I could see him flash an answering grin in the reflection of the dark windshield. âTough shit,â he replied.
I sulked in my seat and stared off into the darkness until Gavin turned into a driveway nearly twenty minutes later. I started to throw the door open but remembered Peanut on my lap at the last moment. I didnât want him to take off and get lost in some strange neighborhood. Gavin seemed to understand, because he grabbed my bag from the back, then scooped Peanut up and secured him under one arm.
Using his hip to prop open the door, he held out a hand. I stared at it for a long second, intent on refusing, before common sense kicked in. The low seats were a bitch to maneuver in, and I was grateful for the help. As soon as I was steady on my feet, he released me and closed the door, then headed to the house. I trailed behind, dragging my feet at the prospect of being stuck prisoner here. I followed him into the kitchen, where a familiar face came into view.
âPhil!â
The older manâs gaze bounced between Gavin and me, then landed on my bandaged triceps. âWhat happened?â
âJust an accident,â Gavin responded.
âI was shot.â I said it as clinically as possible, like it was no big deal, even though the memory still had the power to send shivers down my spine.
Gavin glared at me, and I shrugged my good shoulder as Philâs eyes widened with disbelief. âYou what?!â
âThere was a drive-by at a coffee shop downtown,â Gavin said before I had the chance to speak up. âKate was grazed by a bullet, and she had to have stitches.â
âYou said you were running late,â Phil accused with a withering glare. âYou never said Dr. Winfield was injured.â
âI didnât want to worry you,â Gavin said as he strode toward the fridge and pulled out a bottle of water. He waved it in my direction, and I nodded. I wasnât so stubborn that I would refuse a drink, especially since I hadnât eaten or had anything to drink since lunch.
