CHAPTER THIRTEEN
OLIVIA
He was giving me a choice, but at the same time, he was forcing me to bloody my hands. I should have known I wouldnât find sympathy with him. Heâd always been like this, from the first moment Iâd laid eyes on his ice cold face. But I would never escape it because I loved him so deeply it hurt, so deeply that over the last week, it had felt like my soul was being torn just to fight with him.
But thisâ¦this was crossing a line.
And yet, I still craved him. My body was on fire under his lean, tattooed hands. He was slick with sweat, his white shirt sticking to his chest and the hard ridges down his stomach. The top buttons were undone, revealing the skeleton wings inked across his pectorals.
Lucien had taken all of my firsts. Heâd been my first kiss, the first and only man to see me naked. Heâd taken my virginity on our wedding night and Iâd willingly given it to him because without knowing it in that moment, I already belonged to him.
No one could ever love me like he did. Our bodies fit together perfectly. Weâd both felt it the first time weâd slid between the sheets together, despite not loving each other then. I had no experience outside of him, but I knew that there was no one else in the world who could make me feel the things he did.
Iâd been innocent then, isolated from the complications of sex. But all it had taken was that night when heâd admitted heâd decapitated his father. When heâd taken the last thing I had to give up and fucked me in front of the mirror. That was the moment Iâd realized what kind of man I had tied myself to.
He was the devil in disguise.
Iâd come to realize that the devil was a gentleman. The devil wore charcoal gray suits, he drank expensive whiskey, he spoke French and Italian. He danced like a gentleman and, when the occasion called for it, he could fuck like one too.
Although, most of the time, there was nothing gentlemanly about the things he did.
I shivered, realizing that only I knew all of the things heâd done. Everyone else just saw Lucien Esposito, the cityâs millionaire bad boy, the man groomed for the public eye.
The man who held me in his arms was mine alone to contend with.
Only I had given him everything and tied myself to him forever. My husband was Lucien, the monster. The gentleman, the ice cold devil who fucked like sin and killed without remorse.
But he was the devil I needed more than anything else in this world or the next. The devil I couldnât breathe without.
âGive me time,â I gasped.
The song ended and another began. This one was a slow tango, drenched with desire as it filled the room. He sank to his knees and lifted my leg to drape it over his shoulder. Our eyes locked and he bent slowly, the light glinting off his dark, slicked hair.
