EMPIRICAL TESTS
Conventional and Deviant Identities and Messaging about Deviance
The 2013 Pew LGBT survey included three questions that asked for a forced choice response between answer options that represent assimilation and liberation strategies. The question asked respondents: âWhich statement comes closer to your own viewsâeven if neither is exactly right?â The specific questions were about general distinctiveness, comfort being seen as different, and the maintenance of separate social spaces. After each item below, we list the percentage of respondents selecting each answer.
DISTINCTIVENESS
A. The best way to achieve equality is for LGBT people to be a part of mainstream culture and institutions like marriage (50 percent).
B. LGBT people should be able to achieve equality while still maintaining their own distinct culture and way of life (50 percent).*
COMFORTABLE BEING DIFFERENT
A. I donât want to be seen as different because of my [sexual orientation/identity] (75 percent).
B. My [sexual orientation/identity] makes me different from other people, and I am comfortable with that (25 percent).*
SEPARATE SPACES
A. It is important to maintain places like LGBT neighborhoods and gay and lesbian bars (58 percent).*
B. These types of places will not be important as LGBT people are more accepted into society (42 percent).
