Names and Addresses
Names and addresses are very common types of master data. Sometimes they comprise the entirety of the master dataset, sometimes, just a part, but as you can imagine, they are vital parts of any database, and very tricky to maintain properly. The reason for this is that people are intimately familiar with names and addresses and they don’t take a lot of care entering and changing them rigorously. Nicknames, abbreviations, slang, all are easy for people to understand but fiendishly hard for computers. In addition, there’s no limit to the variations in names and addresses in use. Here are some things I’ve run across:
The source system sent us a Dr. Ben Ehuda, which the name cleansing software[18] changed to Dr. Ben Yehuda (Ben is part of the last name). The data governors in India and the software developers in Delaware all agreed that the change was incorrect. However, I happen to be an Orthodox Jew, and I know that while no one is named Ben Ehuda, Ben Yehuda is a very common name—the software was right.
The business agreed that DO following a name was an abbreviation for Doctor of Osteopathy. That worked very well until we came across Dr. Do.
My wife was born in South Korea, and her birth name was Young-suk Chung. She immigrated to America at age 5, got married as an adult and became Sukie Weinberg. She then converted and became an Orthodox Jew; now her name is Rachel Hirsch. I defy any software to connect all those names to the same person.
