Chapter Seventeen

Ari

“What?” I stared at Luna and her brother, Leo, torn between trying to keep my jaw off the ground and wanting to run for the hills.

Save the world? They thought I could save the world.

No pressure.

Hysteria bubbled up in me. Luna had to be joking.

Luna didn’t look like a girl who knew how to joke anymore.

Nausea followed on the heels of the hysterical urge to laugh. Save the world. Hadn’t the judges said something like that too, back before their procedures? That I could save us. Help my people. I just had to let them connect me to the Beast and everything would be fine.

Yeah, I was looking at how well that had turned out.

“The Judiciary wants the hive to be their weapon,” Luna said. “But… there’s more to it than that. The hive is a life force. A living thing, and it needs you. You… you matter to it. Maybe it’s because you were the first strakirin, or maybe it’s something else, but the hive is drawn to you, and if you abandon it…”

I needed to sit down.

“You have to embrace this,” Luna begged. “Please. Let the song in. Join the hive and—”

My head was already shaking no. No, no, no. Forget sitting. Forget hysteria, because I was way past that. I didn’t need to stop this.

I needed to run.

“Please,” Luna begged. “It’s only a matter of time till he finds us, and when he does, we…” The fear was plain on her face.

I had no idea what was on mine.

I shook my head again, harder. This was… this wasn’t…

“And we’re supposed to believe this isn’t just some kind of trick?”

I jumped. Jace was behind me. All around us, the dehaians watched, visibly tense as hell with their guns aimed and their bodies radiating readiness to shoot.

My brother glared at the strakirin. “You show up and tell her to, what? Join some ‘hive’ thing and trust that it’s a good idea simply because you say so?” He scoffed.

Luna stared at Jace, something almost alien coming into her eyes. Beyond my defenses, I could hear the drone get louder for a moment.

And then it faded, and the look in her eyes did too. “We know you. Jace. Her brother. Leo saw your picture on the news—”

I couldn’t take this anymore. I retreated, vaguely aware there was a cliff nearby and, on some level, not even caring.

It’d get me away from them.

That hysterical laugh tried to bubble up again.

I turned and ran, tearing across the yard and out into the rough terrain beyond. The trees were a blur. Branches swiped at my face, my legs, my arms. Tents flashed past, and startled dehaians too. The darkness was thinning to deep indigo. Dawn was finally starting to arrive.

“Ari!” Jace cried, far in the distance behind me.

I kept running. Save the world. I was supposed to do something that saved the…

This was madness. Total insanity. They wanted me to let the hive in, when my defenses were the only thing keeping me
