Chauntiel

Iwas giddy as hell as we exited the private dining room, completely thrilled at the way the night I’d assumed would be a run of the mill evening was now progressing. Ouima walked between Markie and me, each of us clutching one of her hands as we made our way out of the restaurant with a quick pit stop at the coat check before we headed into the idling car at the curb. Shoutout to Markie’s white-shoe law firm with its twenty-four-seven, on-demand car service for all of its employees. That was coming in handy now since none of us had driven, but we were all in quite the hurry to get to the next venue.

Truth be told, I’d been in sort of a down mood when I’d asked my husband to meet me out for dinner and drinks. The woman with whom I’d been engaged in a relationship, in addition to him, had broken it off with me earlier today, claiming that I could never fully be hers since I’d already pledged fidelity to Markell. She’d also said some rather hurtful things about who I was at the core that had shaken me like no other. But the universe clearly had better in store for me when of all nights, of all places, Ouima had wandered into Ravage.

I didn’t believe in the adage that the best way to get over one person was to get beneath another, but from the moment she walked through those doors, I’d felt connected to her somehow. I had told my husband that I could feel the sadness wafting off of her in waves, but I also had some feeling in the pit of my stomach that I… or we could be the ones to turn whatever sadness she was feeling into some other, infinitely more positive feeling. I didn’t know what made me think I possessed the power, but once I settled into the feeling, I had known that somehow, some way I would be getting to know this woman on a more intimate level.

I had no clue if she would even be open to the possibility, but I wasn’t a person who lived a life of regret. All of life’s experiences—good, bad, or indifferent—ultimately taught me lessons that I carried with me past the initial interaction. It’d taken a bit of persuasion, but once she accepted the drink invitation, my intuitive feeling that this woman was someone I was destined to meet beamed even stronger. I wouldn’t go as far as saying that shooting my… our shot at this woman was some sort of ordained imperative, but I honestly couldn’t say that it wasn’t either.

The ease with which we conversed over a couple cocktails and the eventual dinner.

The confidence with which she asserted herself when questioning the night’s intent.

The intensity with which she spoke when detailing her own life’s experiences and lessons she’d learned along the way.

The vulnerability she showed when overcome with emotion after telling a story about an adventure with her most recent ex.
