Chapter 26

Pricilla shut down her computer. Aquila sauntered into the living room where she sat. “Hey, Quila,” Pricilla greeted. “What’s going on? How was your day?”

“It was okay,” Aquila responded to her somberly. “I miss talking to First Lady Kendra every morning. I hope she’s doing okay.”

It had been four weeks since Matthew and Kendra stood in front of the congregation and informed them that he needed to temporarily step down as senior pastor.

It was amongst the grumbling and whispering that Kendra tearfully announced to the congregation that she had cancer. She told them that she would be going through the process of chemotherapy, which would leave her sick and lethargic most days. She assured them that she regretted not being able to serve them as first lady of Macedonia Baptist Church. But until God healed her, she needed to use her energy fighting the illness that had attacked her body.

Matthew explained to them that God was his first priority, but that God also requires man to provide for and protect his wife. And that was what he intended to do; take care of his wife until further notice. He told them that he would sincerely miss serving them as the senior pastor, but hoped that they understood.

Their parishioners were deeply saddened, and several parishioners stood up and vowed to keep her lifted up in prayer until God blessed her with a full recovery.

Matthew announced that the interim pastor would be Minister Hilliard, and his wife, Sister Claudia, would serve as first lady. The congregation’s reaction was mixed. Some applauded in agreement, while others mumbled their dissatisfaction. Nonetheless, Matthew adjourned the meeting and taught the Word of God with passion, but also with clarity.

Pricilla stood up to stretch her legs. “I hope she’s doing okay too. Maybe we should go see her.”

Aquila shook her head. “We can’t.” Pricilla’s eyebrows furrowed and Aquila continued. “I called Pastor Woodbridge at his office yesterday to give him a message from one of the members. I asked him how she was. He said she was recovering well, but that she didn’t feel up to having company just yet.”

Pricilla sat back down on the recliner. “Oh.” She was thoughtful for a moment. “It seems strange with Sister Hilliard sitting in her place at church. Minister Hilliard is a good speaker, but he can’t take the place of Pastor Matthew.”

Aquila sat on the couch and crossed her legs. “You’re right. I began to look forward to hearing Pastor Woodbridge teach the Word. He explains the scriptures in detail. He even applies a sense of humor within his teaching.”

Pricilla smiled. “That’s true; he’s funny. Minister Hilliard does a good job teaching the Word, but his voice is so monotonous that it’ll put you to sleep.” Aquila laughed. “Pastor looked so weary when he announced that he was gonna step down for a while to take care of First Lady Kendra during her illness.”

“He did look tired,” Aquila agreed. “I hope they’ll both recover and come back to work and church soon.
