Kaci leaned back against Drake as he wrapped his arms around her.

“What next? Are you tired?” He looked at his mom and dad.

“Oh no, it’s not late at home. We should go do something. What do people do for fun around here?” Dad drank down the last of his tea.

Drake wrinkled his brow, clearly surprised that they wanted to go out. “We, um, . . .”

“Dancing. People go dancing.” Kaci looked up at him. “But I should probably change if we’re going to do that.”

“Tell me what to wear.” His mom clapped. “This is exciting.”

“I may stay in this dress but throw on my boots. Jeans and a shirt would be fine, too. Any shoes with smooth soles would work.” Kaci reached back and grabbed his hand. “Is that okay?”

Drake hugged her tighter. “Perfectly okay.” He handed the BMW keys to his dad. “I’m going to change and run Kaci home in the Lamborghini. If I leave you an address—”

“Take the BMW. We’ll be fine.”

Maisie poked Trey in the side. “Just fine.”

Drake walked out of the room without another word.

Laughing, his parents wandered down the hall, leaving Kaci alone in the kitchen. She used the minutes to remind herself that Drake was pretending. Even if he wasn’t, pretending to date meant she didn’t need to tell Sam there was something going on.

And there wasn’t. Not really.

Kaci held on to that thought, trying to reassure herself that she wasn’t the worst friend in the world.

It wasn’t long before Drake walked into the room dressed in fitted jeans and a paisley shirt. “Ready?”

“Yeah. Your parents—”

He put his hand up.

Kaci took the hint and didn’t say anymore.

Once they were both buckled in and on their way to her apartment, he finally spoke. “I’m not sure if they are even going to meet us or if they just want us to go dancing.”

“I texted your mom Art’s number in case they wanted to get a limo.”

“Send them the address too.”

“Where are we going? We never talked about where.”

“Pick your favorite place to dance.” He flashed a smile. “I didn’t know you liked boot scootin’.”

“Do you?” She texted the address to Drake and his parents.

“I do now.”
