ON THE MOVE

Just as Washington, DC, lost 2 teams, so too did another city have to lose its team in order for baseball to return to Washington. That team was the Montreal Expos, an NL East institution from their founding in 1969 until their departure following the 2004 season. Here are a few facts about the much-missed Expos:

Won a single NL East title, in 1981

Had baseball’s best record, 74–40, when a players’ strike led to the cancellation of the rest of the 1994 season

As of July 2014, 5 Hall of Famers played for or managed the Expos for at least part of their careers: Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Tony Perez, Frank Robinson, and Dick Williams

Pitchers threw 4 no-hitters during the Expos’ brief life, the first of which came in the team’s ninth game

During their final 3 seasons, the Expos were owned by Major League Baseball

During the 2003 and 2004 seasons, the Expos played some of their “home” games in San Juan, Puerto Rico
