The fireworks were set to begin in fifteen minutes. Sienna was lounging in a camping chair with Tess on one side and Reagan on the other. Holly and Bridget were on the other side of Tess, and Hannah chatted with Cassie—Austin’s nanny for AJ—on a quilt spread out in front of the chairs. The half moon was already shining brightly above them as the constellations blinked on, one star at a time. Today had been amazing. And challenging, exciting, nerve-wracking and eye-opening.

Something had shifted within her. Something she didn’t want to dwell on.

It was too scary to contemplate.

She looked around for Connor. He was watching the fireworks with his friends nearby. Even from here, she could tell he was enjoying himself as he joked around with them. Lily had returned to the ranch with Julie and Kevin earlier. Her niece had had a fun time, too, but in her words, she needed to get back to the puppies.

“So, Reagan, I noticed how Brad Sanders was eyeing you earlier.” Tess bent forward to talk to Reagan with Sienna between them. “I hope he asked you out.”

Reagan stiffened. “He did not. And I don’t want him to.”

Tess laughed mischievously. “I think you’d have a good time. And don’t even try to say he isn’t cute.”

Reagan leaned closer to Sienna, keeping her voice low. “He dated all of my friends in high school. Every one of them. I would never go out with him.”

Sienna stifled a laugh.

Holly, perking up at the talk of Reagan dating, scooted her chair closer to Tess’s to hear better. “What about Tim Evans?”

Reagan glared at her. “Holly, I love you like a sister. I’m glad Jet married you. But if I ever hear you mention Tim Evans to me as a potential date again, I’m disowning you.”

Holly rolled her eyes, shaking her head. Again, Sienna laughed. Who knew Reagan could be this assertive when it came to dating?

“What’s wrong with Tim?” Holly asked, unfazed by her speech.

“What’s right with him?”

“He owns a successful business.”

“He’s a mortician. I don’t see myself living in a funeral home.”

Holly’s face fell. “But—”

“No.” Reagan leaned in to Sienna again. “I’m this close to inventing a boyfriend, just to get everyone off my back.”

“Blaine said something similar earlier.” Sienna’s gaze zoomed to where he and his buddies were standing, not too far from the ladies, talking, laughing and waiting for the fireworks.

“Yeah, well, no one’s harassing him now that you’re here.” She reached down for her bottle of water, and Sienna was thankful for the darkness. Did they think she and Blaine could be a couple? For real?

Her heart flipped at the thought. It had been what she’d been fighting for days—this feeling, this longing for the real thing.

Blaine was the real thing.

Maybe it was the fact he was a cowboy, devoted to the land and the animals on it. Or maybe it was their history—the easy companionship and fun they’d had in high school. His handsome face, strong arms and beautiful blue eyes were all factors, too.
