Nineteen

Queen Serephine

After only a couple of hours of sleep, I wake refreshed but restless. I sense Rahmirus back in his realm though, which I’m relieved of, so I go in search of him.

I smile the entire way to the pits at the front of his lair, but I also berate myself for it. Seeing him shudder with my burn was everything I remembered it to be, yes, but I should know better than to play games like this with him.

Even when he does start them.

But I never could resist his baiting. Mostly because of the punishments he’d inflict on me when I’d lose.

Or as I liked to call them, his rewards.

I spot Yazmine and Domvarus in the distance, out in the open now the rains have ended, and I sense their contentment at being reunited. They were gifts from The Creator, too, on our third century, and they were always happiest together.

But I soon kneel as my children get up from the stone steps to greet me. They’ve just fed from the pits; I can smell the metallic remnants on their fiery breaths.

“How is Belvia?” they ask, tussling for my strokes.

“Mostly the same,” I say, “but I do sense her tiredness lessening.”

“We feel it, too,” Brakaz says, giving my cheek a warm lick.

I kiss her nose. “Why don't you all go sit with her? Having her brothers and sisters close may give her strength.”

They agree and run past me as I get to my feet to watch them leave.

Everyone is so happy…

“Couldn’t sleep?”

I turn to Rahmirus. “Not anymore, no.”

He nods. “I haven't slept this little in years either.”

I walk over to him. “Or be this productive.”

He gives me a knowing glance.

“What did you find in the Griamenian Wastelands?” I ask, hoping he’ll answer me this time.

He looks towards our horses. “I confirmed the tremors are coming from inside the realm, and that Queth barely guards his entrance, the arrogant prick.”

“He's been allowed to run amuck, so why should he fear anything?” My fury rises when those words leave my lips. “Perhaps that too, is my fault.”

His eyes darken. “Queth carries all fault for the state of our world,” he says, adamantly, “and…”

“And?” I push.

“And everything.”

I study him, knowing he's hiding something. I can feel it.

“How was Hacriadore when you visited yesterday?” he asks.

“Fine. As our numbers are rising so quickly, I assigned Rigranath and Voroloth to help Og’Drena—not that she needs it, but it seems the three of them get on quite well.”

“They're fucking,” he says bluntly, and I smirk.

“Og’Drena chose them as her prizes after winning her first tournament, and it seems she found each of their weaknesses.”

His eyes burn now. “Which are?”

“Multiple participants.”

He gives my body a sweeping glance. “They're young, what do they know? There is no better satisfaction than to please one alone for all eternity. Do you not agree?”

“I do,” I say quietly, but then I tense when a distasteful memory surfaces.

He knows the cause; his wounded expression tells me so. “The truth will come to light soon,” he says, walking past me.
