CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN
Smith was looking through the pathology report on John Ware in his office when Smyth came in.
âMy office now,â the Superintendent barked.
âIâm busy,â Smith said and carried on looking at the screen.
âYou made me look like a complete fool back there,â Smythâs voice changed pitch. âYou left me in front of those vultures looking like an idiot.â
âI donât have time for this, sir,â Smith turned around and told him. âAnd I do not appreciate having my time wasted in the middle of a double murder investigation.â
Smith tried to calm his breathing but the mere presence of Smyth in his office was making it impossible.
He turned his attention back to the screen.
âThe whole purpose of the press conference was to reassure the public that the police are on the side of the low-income estates, and that debacle back there had the opposite effect.â
Smyth was now talking to Smithâs back.
Smith breathed in deeply and kept quiet.
âDonât you have something to say?â Smyth said.
Smith shook his head.
What happened next would stay in Smithâs memory for the rest of his life. Superintendent Smyth approached Smith, grabbed him by the shoulders and forcefully turned him so they were facing each other.
âLook at me when Iâm talking to you,â Smyth said in a voice Smith had never heard come out of his mouth before.
âGet your hands off me,â Smith said and shrugged the hands away. âAnd letâs get a couple of things straight. One, I did not make you look like a complete fool because you did a perfectly good job of that on your own. Two, I did not leave you with those vultures looking like an idiot because you are an idiot. You didnât need any more help from me.â
Smyth took a step closer. He had a wild look in his eyes that Smith found quite unsettling. Then he did something that took Smith completely by surprise.
The blow wasnât hard, but it still made Smith see flashes of light for a few seconds. Smith was more stunned than hurt. Superintendent Jeremy Smyth, the public-school buffoon had just punched him in the face just under his left eye. Smyth moved his arm back and Smith could see he was getting ready to aim another punch. Smith beat him to it. In a flash he was on his feet â he stepped back a few feet and landed a right hook under the Superintendentâs jaw. Smythâs head snapped back and he swaggered backwards a couple of paces. Smith hit him again, this time on his right cheekbone.
The whole surreal episode lasted barely thirty seconds. It was clear that Smyth had no more fight left in him. He rubbed his cheek and pointed a bony finger at Smith.
âYouâre finished. You are well and truly fucked.â
He staggered out of the room.
Smith sat for a while staring blankly at the computer screen. He wasnât actually looking at what was on the screen, he was somewhere else entirely. What had just happened with the Superintendent didnât seem real,
