Chapter 10: Brand

Watching Echo’s face as we walked into Dr. Lavenir’s classroom was almost funny. She was used to thinking that demons were the way they appeared when the spells of Grimway functioned correctly. She thought that all demons looked like beautiful people.

I knew it was puerile to find it amusing, but I had to put a hand over my face to hide my grin. Little did she know how unpleasant some demons looked when they were in their own homes. Sure, I was an attractive guy; I did work out quite a lot. And firebringers were mostly humanoid, with a tendency to have red scales sometimes, but not always.

I wasn’t sure if Echo even realized that my parents had magically altered their appearance for her benefit when she stayed with us over the school holidays. My mom did always dress like she was stepping from the country club tennis courts. That part was true. But usually she had scarlet horns that poked through her hairdo. And my dad had red, lizard-like skin on his hands, which only increased the more he summoned fire in action in the courtroom. Neither he nor I had gotten the family trait of a tail. Sometimes I wished I had, but I figured it might also get in the way when I was in the gym.

At any rate, Echo’s face was a sight as she took in the scene of the new Grimway. If she was going to gag like that when she walked past a slimebringer, then I guess I was glad that my own handsomeness was preserved for the time being. It must have something to do with our association with her. Our mating bonds had altered us.

When Dr. Lavenir tossed me my prefect’s badge, a new pride buzzed in my ears, so that I couldn’t hear anything else for about fifteen minutes. I knew I deserved it. And I’d do my best to uphold the values of the school.

If only I could figure out what they were supposed to be this week.

No, seriously, I loved Grimway. My brothers had all been here, as had my cousins (tails and all). My parents had met here. So, technically, without this school, I wouldn’t even exist.

After what seemed like a really, really long time, the Headmistress dismissed us. I’d zoned out entirely, to tell the truth.

As Echo and I walked through the subdued crowd in the hallway, I touched base with her. “So, hey, I sort of stopped listening in there. What did she assign?”

Echo looked at me in disbelief. “You mean you didn’t listen to any of it? Nothing she said? You missed a ton of information, you dumbass.”

“Hey, now,” I put my arm around her. “No need to be so grouchy. I just wanted to spend a few minutes basking in the glow of getting my badge.”

She allowed a tiny smile to curve the corners of her mouth. “I noticed that you were pretty pleased with yourself.”

“And it doesn’t mean that I’m glad about what happened to Colin,” I hurried to add.
