Chapter 16

We hang out in Harlan and Derek’s room Monday night. It’s kind of a tight fit with six people in here, even though their room’s a double, not a single like mine, but it’s not too bad. There’s two guys besides them and Ash—Wes and Hunter, who don’t live in our hall, but who have fourth-period Potions Studies with Derek—making me the only girl. Which is a little weird, but also makes this feel way more low key than, say, the party on Friday, because I don’t have to worry about other girls dismissing me and then looking at Ash like they’re already naming their future children. If any of these guys are picking out their future kids’ names with him, they’re keeping it to themselves.

I mean, I don’t think they are, but still. It’s much less pressure. Plus, none of them seem like they’re judging me for being with him or acting like they don’t think I’m good enough. Maybe that’s just because they’re not catty bitches who are also interested in him, or maybe it’s because they’re his friends, but either way, it’s kind of refreshing.

Also? They all call me Izzy, even Wes and Hunter, who I’d never met before tonight. As in, they knew my name before I even got here, because I guess Ash talks about me? I mean, I figured he’d probably mentioned me a few times, but they all seem like they sort of know me, even though they don’t.

They have a TV in their room, and everyone’s playing video games. Well, everyone except me, because they’re playing some racing game, which, as I mentioned before, I’m not very good at. But it does mean there’s something to look at when I get bored or feel out of place. Not that I really feel that much of either of those things, or at least not at the moment. I’m sitting next to Ash on the edge of one of the beds, and there’s not much space between us, and Ash’s hand is touching mine. And I should probably scoot over some so that it isn’t, but I’m also supposed to be his girlfriend, so…

So moving away from him would be weirder than not moving away from him. And he’s the one who pointed out that I flinch every time he touches me in public, so if I don’t flinch or freak out this time, then that would make sense and not be, like, a reason to think I actually like having my hand pressed up against his or anything. Or that I like him. In that way.

Ha.

“Derek! Come on!” Harlan shouts. “North tower represent—you’re killing us here.”

“Shut up!” Derek shouts back. He’s in the middle of a race with Wes. I haven’t been keeping track of which one of them’s in front, partially because I don’t care and partially because I’m distracted by the whole hand-touching situation. “Every time you open your mouth, you make me screw up!”

Wes laughs. Well, he kind of cackles, so I’m guessing that means he’s ahead right now.
