Chapter 9

Rebecca was so tired, tired of fighting, tired of keeping the pace, just plain tired.

“Go to sleep,” Delta muttered beside her.

She gave a strangled laugh. “How did you know I was two steps away from crashing?”

“I can see it,” he said, with a gentle smile. “You don’t have any reason to worry. Let’s just get you some sleep, while I try to figure out where I’m taking you.”

“Yeah, it would help if we had somebody on our side. You did contact law enforcement, didn’t you?”

“I did,” he admitted, with a hard tone slithering into his words. “The jury is still out on that one.”

“Yeah. I was afraid you would say something like that.” She yawned. “Can we just grab a room somewhere? Maybe downtown, so I can get some sleep, and Gracie can relax a bit?”

“That’s the plan,” he replied, checking the rearview mirror, “but I would like to find one that doesn’t have people spying on us.”

“One is farther down the road,” she said, pointing in that direction. “Just as you come into town. He doesn’t get a ton of business because, once you’re in town, you always find something in town instead of farther out. We would be a little more anonymous there.”

“Only if nobody feels like turning us in.”

“Considering what we’ve already been through,” she noted, “I agree that we can’t take any more chances.”

He nodded and smiled. “I’m glad to hear that,” he said, with a chuckle.

“You really do like getting your own way, don’t you?” she asked, with a knowing glance in his direction.

“In something like this? Yes,” he declared, “and I don’t make any excuses for it either. I have too much life experience telling me when things are about to go sideways, and I’m not willing to sit around and wait for that to happen. You’ve got a whole community siding with the company that had you kidnapped and wanted to kill you. This has to be something bigger than just some sale going on. Don’t worry. We’ve got several people on that.”

“Glad to hear it. Oh, there. Take that next turnoff,” she pointed out.

He quickly swerved into a better position for the upcoming turn, also testing to see if anyone was following them, and soon they were parked in front of the motel. “Let me go in and take a look.” He hopped out, walked into the reception area, and quickly booked a room with two beds. He had to pay extra for Gracie and figured that was money well spent. As soon as he got back into the vehicle, he said, “We’re all set for the night.”

Driving around to the back, Delta helped Rebecca out of the car, then scooped up Gracie, and they all moved upstairs to the room.

“Is there a reason why we’re coming in through the back?” she asked with concern.

“Yeah, so my vehicle isn’t so easily seen from the front.”

“Right. We could go get my vehicle.”

“No, not likely. The sheriff or the company bad guys are all over that one right now.
